The Purple Ribbon

A Novel by Kip Lyman

“An unforgettable thriller set in Ft. Pierce, Florida”

Five purple stars indicating a five-star rating.

“Unnerving and unforgettable, The Purple Ribbon is a masterclass in psychological tension. It peels back the layers of its characters with chilling precision, revealing how past wounds and present choices collide in the most harrowing ways. I can already see the scenes unfold - I can’t wait until this becomes a movie.”

FAQs

How did you come up with your characters?

Many of my characters are inspired by people I know personally or by well-known actors. For instance, Chelsea’s therapist, Ethyle, is modeled after a dear friend of mine—a delightful, quirky child psychologist who sadly passed away many years ago. Another minor character, Morgan, is described as having a "Clark Kent" appearance. I hold very precise mental images of all my characters and strive to convey these visuals as clearly as possible in the narrative. That said, I fully appreciate that each reader will form their own interpretations of the people and places in the story which I find both inevitable and beautiful.

Who is your favorite character in the novel?

Each character holds a special place in my heart, even the antagonist. Among the three main characters, Chelsea, Tyler, and Scott, I feel the strongest connection to Scott. He is a profoundly caring and resilient individual, marked by both strength and compassion. Though he has so much to offer, he carries an undercurrent of turmoil that makes him especially compelling to me. I'm also particularly fond of Sammi, Chelsea’s mother. In many ways, she reflects aspects of myself.

How did you come up with the narrative?

This is a great question and one that is difficult for me to answer. I don’t feel I consciously created this story. It came to me with an almost overwhelming force, most often in the middle of the night. It was not a dream, but rather persistent thoughts and vivid ideas that I couldn’t silence once I was awake. After the basic outline took shape, populating it with characters and settings came quite naturally. The major and minor plot developments however, continued to reveal themselves in those quiet, nocturnal hours.

How did you come up with the settings?

All of the settings in the novel are drawn from places I have personally visited and know well. Likewise, many of the events that unfold within these settings are based on experiences I have either lived through myself or observed firsthand. The notable exception is the portrayal of childhood trauma—thankfully, that is not something I have personally endured.
